The VW Golf Country was a rugged, lifted, all-wheel-drive version of the Mk2 Golf. Ahead of its time, it is widely regarded as one of the world's very first crossover SUVs.
It debuted as the "Montana" concept at the 1989 Geneva Motor Show.
Originally a design exercise, the enthusiastic public demand pushed VW to put it into production.
Production ran from April 1990 to December 1991. Standard Golf CL Syncro models were built in Wolfsburg, Germany, and then sent to Graz, Austria, where they were converted by Steyr-Daimler-Puch (the manufacturer famous for the original Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen).
