  Back in 1969, HD claimed the AMA Grand National Championship (entitling them to run the #1 plate the following season) - it wasn't until later on that the #1 appeared with a stars & stripes theme across clothing, accessories and even some of the street bikes themselves. It was further popularized thru the 70s-era stunt- and showman, Evel Knievel's XR-750.
